While saving for the Tribal Base (costs almost a half million gold from Cape Clawed, it's ranked the most powerful on the MH Wiki, released just this week), to collect Savoury Vegetables in Nerg Plains, the best setup appears to be HVMT/Explosive/Gouda or SB+. Going to use Gouda, saving the SB+ for the dreaded Derr Dunes...
Also, Elub mice have great points but poor gold, Derr mice are just plain tough, making Nerg the most appropriate place to plant myself now within the Tribal Isles.
Planning on waiting for the Tribal Base before trying for the Chieftains, collecting pepper seeds & Derr, because I do not have the Polar Base :P Strange thing is that although the Birthday Cake base ranks 2nd highest (below the Tribal Base) with many traps, it doesn't work as well as the Explosive base in Nerg...
