Last night we went to Kilo with a couple of great friends in hope of a good evening filled with yummy food and drink. It is atop Loysel's Toy, at 66 Kampong Bugis, Ture / Sam Tat Warehouse, tel: 6467 3987.
To start we wanted to order drinks, when we asked for a drinks menu, the waitress pointed to the bar and said that's all we have. After ordering a mojito, we were told they didn't have that :( So much for pointing at the bar... another waitress had to explain that they only had standard drinks with house red & white wine and Sapporo beer on tap. I had water all night... the only non-alcoholic beverage they had last night was pineapple juice :(
The A5 size postcard menu looked like a season out of Top Chef, sous vide this, tartare that... we chose 3 starters:
- Ahi mango poke with wanton skin -- this was light and tasty, wish the portion was bigger,
- Parmasen & mozzarella king portobello with bacon -- think loaded potato skin but on a big mushroom and
- Seared scallops in beef mushroom sauce - yummy rich creamy sauce with thick juicy scallops.
We shared 3 starters:
- Angel hair pasta in cream of ebiko -- nothing special, white cream sauce with ebiko roe,
- Balsamic duck leg with buttered potato mash n asparagus -- I liked the duck, fell-off-the-bone-tender with a delicious balsamic sauce, I felt this was the best tasting of the 3 entrees, we cleaned up the plate, and
- Day Night 12 hour pork belly with yam mash -- think Chinese-style lor-bah, braised pork belly in dark soya sauce, but the deep fried pork skin was the savior of this dish, the yam mash reminded me of the oh-nee dessert without the sugar.
All 6 orders plus 1 Saporro & 3 house white wines came up to about S$170 including all taxes & service charge (check your bill before paying, we were charged double for our wine). I don't see myself visiting them again soon because my friend spat out an elastic band from the beef mushroom sauce (this dish was comped so the bill would have been higher), and with the low ceiling it got quite noisy as the place filled up. Though the evening breeze was welcoming :) Be sure to call ahead to reserve a table of you want to give them a go.
Do let me know how your experience at Kilo went, leave a comment :)
Shots of the sampled dishes are in the earlier posts.
